My future job

When I chose Public Administration as a career I felt I was pigeonholing myself into a future that was not what I wanted for my life. The first year of college was very difficult and complex because a part of me was not happy with the choice I had made for my life, it was as if I myself had been constantly punishing myself for making a decision that I was never entirely convinced of. In spite of that and my negative thoughts, I gradually gained more security and affection for what I was studying; the feeling that the vocation of service was present in the midst of so much uncertainty.

Almost 3 years after having made this decision, I see in retrospect that, although I still can’t imagine a lifetime working at a desk, if I imagine working for Chile, for older adults. The only thing I had clear when choosing Public Administration was to do social justice for all the grandparents and grandparents of our country, to give them dignity in life and not to wait, even more, for the deterioration of a system that assists the long-lived population without greater success. In order to achieve these changes, I plan to travel throughout Chile, as I mentioned, knowing the experiences and experiences of different people, realities and contexts, because otherwise, I will not be able to know and evidence, as appropriate, the different demands, needs and desires of each and every adult and elderly person in our country. I hope the first stage of my fieldwork will motivate me even more.

This is where the figure of my paternal grandfather enters the scene, he and only he drove me to risk and decide for this career, he and only he has the credit of this adventure called college since if it hadn’t been for their stories, Stories and experiences that day by day told me, I would never have bet on the work of the State. For the same reason, in the future I see myself working for and by grandparents and grandparents, building a more conscious society about what it means to grow old, exalting the achievements and lives of those who, somewhere in our history, did everything for us, trying to leave a fairer Chili.

While it is logical to expect a financial reward for the work done, I only hope to be able to live with dignity, to be able to sleep peacefully knowing that the salary is directly proportional to what my work demands. However, my great motivation is the elderly and their well-being, social actors who must be recognized as subjects of rights, without distinguishing who they were or who they are today.
